Thinking of registering your retired police dog with our foundation? Since our launch in 2020, we have helped in excess of 150 retired police dogs from across the United Kingdom, covering over £330,000 worth of veterinary and rehabilitation treatment.

As a foundation, we operate a membership scheme for retired police dogs, meaning they must be registered with us, and be a part of our membership scheme in order to access support and member benefits from the foundation.

Our retired police dog membership is open to retired police dogs from across the United Kingdom who meet our eligibility criteria outlined below. Eligibility criteria TO JOIN OUR FOUNDATION

Membership to the Thin Blue Paw Foundation is open to all retired police dogs who have served for a minimum of 12 months operationally from date of initial licence, with one of the 43 home office police forces, or alternatively Police Scotland, Police Service of Northern Ireland, British Transport Police, Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Ministry of Defence Police, or the Royal Air Force Police.
Retired police dogs who have been medically retired and therefore unable to complete a minimum of 12 months operationally from date of initial licence, are eligible for membership to the foundation. In such circumstances the foundation requires a veterinary report which outlines the medical diagnosis and confirmation of medical retirement.
Retired police dogs must reside in the United Kingdom upon retirement to be eligible for membership with the foundation, except for retired Royal Air Force or Ministry of Defence police dogs, which may live abroad if their handler is deployed overseas.
Retired police wellbeing and trauma support dogs are not eligible for membership with the foundation, unless they have served operationally as a police dog for a minimum of 12 months, from initial licence.
Retired police stud dogs or brood bitches are not be eligible for membership with the foundation, unless they have served operationally as a police dog for a minimum of 12 months, from initial licence.
Retired police dog’s are not required to have an insurance policy in order to become a member of our foundation. However should their owner wish to explore medical insurance available for retired police dog, our partners Animal Friends Pet Insurance do offer a policy for retired police dogs. Full information on the insurance policies available to retired police dogs can be found on their website, alternatively, other pet insurance providers may be available.
Upon a retired police dog becoming a member of the foundation, our grants can cover up to 100% of the treatment or medication costs required, and we do not limit this dependant on a dog’s length of service. All grants are awarded in line with the foundation’s financial assistance terms and conditions.
A retired police dog must have an active membership with the foundation, in order to submit an application for financial support. Once your retired police dog’s membership has been approved, you’re able to submit applications for financial assistance straight away, there is no grace period.

If you own more than one retired police dog, please contact us at hello@thinbluepaw.org.uk to set up your direct debits, as a discounted membership fee of £15 per month per additional police dog applies to retired police dogs registered under the same owner.
