A retired police dog is back on all four paws after having major surgery which was funded by us.
Nine-year-old RPD Jooba started her working life with the military before moving to the police. She ended up at South Yorkshire Police where she was partnered with PC Michael Greaves in 2021, retiring to live with him and his family the following year.
That year, she needed surgery after tearing her cruciate ligament – which we funded.
Then, when she started limping again in November 2024, vets found she’d damaged the cruciate ligament in her other leg.
She had surgery but, sadly, her recovery didn’t go as planned and she was hospitalised again after she contracted an infection in her joint.
Michael said: “Jooba was clearly in a lot of pain and vets did further tests and x-rays as well as a fluid withdrawal which showed that she had an infection in the joint. She needed strong antibiotics and significant pain relief and, thankfully, she’s now beginning to come out of the other side.”
She returned home in time to spend Christmas with her loving family and soon started to bear weight on her leg again.
Jooba, a Belgian Malinois, worked as a general purpose dog and initially found retired life difficult but has now settled into her slower pace.
Michael added: “She’s such a kind, loving dog who brings us so much happiness.”
Our chairman, Kieran Stanbridge, said: “Jooba dedicated years of her life to working for the military and then the police. It’s only right that now, in her retirement, she’s given the very best care to get her back on her paws quickly and back home with her adoring family.
“We’re proud to have been there for Jooba in her hour of need, and to ease the financial burden on Michael and his family, particularly at Christmas.”
