HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG ALF IN RETIREMENT
RPD Alf spent six years working as a general purpose dog with Police Service Northern Ireland with handler, Ken.
Alf retired early at the age of six, in 2017, on veterinary advice, having developed arthritis and spondylitis in the spine which requires daily medication, which we pay for.
Ken, himself now retired, said: “Unfortunately, Alf’s police career was cut short by a shoulder injury which he suffered during the search of a building site and he subsequently became quite lame.
“Alf is a much-loved member of our family who, thanks to the assistance from the Foundation, has enjoyed retirement as a couch potato. He is having a great life; it’s the least he deserves.”

“We’re grateful for all the financial assistance given by the Foundation, including the dog food provided by Barking Heads. Retired police dogs can be very expensive to keep and there’s currently no assistance on their retirement. We believe it’s time service dogs received a pension too.”
