FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG MIKY
RPD Miky served with the Ministry of Defence Police for six years until his retirement in 2020.
His handler, Joanne Chappell, adopted him and he went to live with her as a pet.
She said: “Miky was a good all-round general purpose dog, working at various MoD establishments.
“He was a loyal, intelligent dog whose resilience allowed him to transition from my work partner into a life as my beloved companion.
“He loves walks along the seafront and playing on the beach.”

In 2026, Miky fell ill and needed a series of tests, scans and x-rays – at a cost of over £1,200 – funded by the Foundation.
Joanne said: “I can’t tell you how grateful we are to the Foundation for helping Miky.
“After talking to the vet we decided the surgery needed to take biopsies from his bladder, where they located inflammation, was too invasive and risk for a 13-year-old boy so we’ve instead settled him on medication to keep him comfortable and pain-free.
“The Foundation is so important to dogs like Miky, and their owners, as there’s no pension when they retire and all costs fall to the owner; the biggest expense being veterinary care as we are unable to get insurance.”

“During such a difficult time the Foundation stepped in and was an absolute Godsend, managing it with the utmost compassion, providing full support, and paying his vet bills in full, for which we cannot thank them enough.“
