MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG BILLIE
What was Billie’s job in the police?
Billie was specifically trained so he could assist in investigations into rape and sexual offences by finding the DNA crucial for the case. His nose can detect as little as 0.016ml (or a pin prick) of fluid more than a year after it was deposited, if indoors.
What was Billie like as a police dog?
Billie’s handler PC Dean Allen said: “In 2014 Billie and I started off on the journey to what has now become a highly successful forensic search dog project unlike any other in the country. The project has changed the way in which sexual offences are investigated and between them, Billie and his four-legged colleague Sybil, have helped put serious offenders behind bars up and down the country.”
What’s Billie’s greatest achievement?
“Billie was awarded with a special rosette in acknowledgement of his skills and determination in helping the force bring a number of sex offenders to justice.”
What’s your favourite memory with Billie since retirement?
“Billie is enjoying retired life and loves his annual holidays on the north Norfolk coast.”
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG BILLIE IN RETIREMENT
RPD Billie joined Derbyshire Constabulary in 2014 with a very unique job to do – he was the first detection dog in the UK (and possibly the world) to be trained to sniffer out seminal fluid.
In 2020, after six years of service and pioneering work, Billie retired. His handler, PC Dean Allen, was unable to keep him so he went to live with Sue and her family in Derbyshire, and their springer spaniel, Molly.
Sue said: “Billie is a very special boy being the first forensic dog in the UK specifically trained just to detect semen.”

In January 2025 Billie had to be admitted to the vets twice with suspected toxicity and pancreatitis.
“It was a very scary time for us all,” Sue added.
“We are very thankful to our vets who gave him excellent care, and to the Thin Blue Paw which has covered the full cost of his treatment.
“We’re dedicated to ensuring Billie continues to have the best retirement, receiving all the necessary treatments and medication he needs.”

“It’s reassuring to know that the Thin Blue Paw Foundation was created to help support retired police dogs following their years of dedicated service to the public.“
Sue, Billie’s owner
