FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG KENAI
RPD Kenai was bred in Hungary before coming to the UK and training as a general purpose dog with North Yorkshire Police, where he worked for six years.
He became a firearms support dog before he retired and he was adopted by fellow police officer George Cants.
He said: “Kenai had a gift for tracking and never took any notice of police officers when he was working, but knew who he was looking for. He was excellent at tracking vulnerable missing people and lost children.
“I heard about the Thin Blue Paw when I signed a petition about pensions for police dogs and when we adopted Kenai his handler told us about the support the Foundation provides to retired police dogs.”

Sadly, George’s family were forced to part with Kenai after his children developed severe allergies to him and he went to live with fellow North Yorkshire officers Ashley and Jess.
They said: “As soon as we met him we fell in love, and he settled in right away. He’s such a good dog; he’s so soppy and acts like a big puppy!”
The Foundation stepped in to support Kenai when, in May 2026, he fractured his elbow while playing fetch. He needed emergency veterinary treatment and had specialist surgery to repair the fracture.
The charity also supports Kenai with regular medication for arthritis.

“The Foundation helps with peace of mind with advice and, that possibly, funds would be available to keep Kenai enjoying his retirement comfortably.”
