RPD Boss was found as a stray in Norfolk and collected by the dog warden before he was suggested to the police and joined Kent Police in 2023.
PC Daniel Carter was partnered with him and described the German Shepherd as ‘a natural’. The formidable duo were honoured with several awards for their work and Boss assisted in more than 100 arrests.
Boss qualified as a firearms support dog and, in one job, helped to save the life of a high-risk missing person who had threatened to harm himself, after leading Daniel and other officers to him to get him the help he needed.
In September 2025, while off duty, the pair were out for a walk when a car crashed into a road closure. The driver smelled of alcohol and tried to flee so Boss detained him and Daniel arrested him and called it into colleagues.
Sadly, in 2026, Boss – who had started limping – was diagnosed with arthritis and vets recommended he retire early, much to Daniel’s heartbreak.
Boss went to live in Wales with Daniel’s parents. His mum, Nicky, said: “Boss has settled into retired life here in Wales really well.
“He is spoiled rotten and has claimed our granddaughter’s old bed as his own. He loves going for countryside walks and saying ‘hello’ to the cows in the field. He loves to run through the fields and splash in the brook.
“We try to visit Dan every month or so and Boss always comes with us. I know they love to see each other.”
The Foundation will support Boss in the future as his family manage his arthritis.
“I don’t think I’ll ever find another dog like Boss. He made my life easier, made me a better handler and made me look far better than I probably was. He was my friend and I’ll miss him on the streets but I know the Foundation and my parents will help him have a good retirement.“
