HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG CSOCSI IN RETIREMENT
RPD Csocsi – pronounced Cosy – was bred and trained in Holland before joining the British Army and working as a Ministry of Defence general purpose dog at AWE Aldermanston, Berkshire.
Kevin and Carole Fletcher, from Surrey, took Csocsi on in 2020 after the retired hound spent a year in kennels waiting to find the perfect home.
Retired police officer Kevin said: “Unfortunately, at the end of his career, Csocsi’s handler, Tom, was not able to take him, and there was a fear he wouldn’t be homed.
“We’d been looking for a dog to replace our late German Shepherd, Willow, and spent a long time considering whether he was the right dog for us.
“We spent several months driving 40 miles up and down the motorway visiting him before making the decision.

“When we picked him up his handler was in bits and I know he misses him a lot but, fortunately, Csocsi is determined to enjoy his retirement and he immediately took possession of the sofa!
“From being a sharp, disciplined, focussed canine deterrent used for searching, tracking and assisting with arrests, he now loves cuddles and likes to tell us exactly what he wants!”
Despite eye condition pannus, Coscsi retired with a clean bill of health but soon started having problems with one of his paws and x-rays revealed he had arthritis in his elbow.
Kevin added: “As many will know, it’s difficult to get insurance for a retired police dog with pre-existing conditions. However, the Thin Blue Paw Foundation stepped forward to help us meet the added, unexpected costs of the x-rays that he required for his arthritis.”

“The Foundation is a fantastic gesture and a real help for those animals who have given unquestioningly of their service; we’re incredibly grateful for their support.”
