HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG DANNY IN RETIREMENT

RPD Danny was bred by the Metropolitan Police and joined their force where he served as a general purpose dog. 

He only had a short career with the police after developing a condition that made it difficult for him to keep weight on. 

Jenny Preston, from Kent, spotted him on a social media rehoming appeal and offered to adopt him in January 2022 following his retirement from service. 

Jenny, who volunteers and helps the Foundation with merchandise, now takes Danny to events and meet-and-greets to highlight the work of the charity.

Six-year-old Danny needs daily enzymes – costing around £70 a month – to treat a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) which means the small intestine can’t digest food because of problems with the digestive enzymes. 

Jenny – who was a dog handler with Kent Police before retiring, and adopted several of her own previous working dogs – said: “They’re not a prescription medication but without taking them every day he’d die.

“It can be difficult to keep weight on him which meant, when he was diagnosed, he had to retire from service.”

The Foundation helps with the cost of Danny’s ongoing medication.
