MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG JASPER
What are the highlights from Jasper’s career?
“Jasper had some really good jobs where if he’d not been there we’d have never made a find. He found drugs under floorboards in a house and also found £35,000 worth of cocaine in an area search. It had been hidden inside a rucksack buried underground beneath a pile of grass clippings.”
What does retirement look like for Jasper?
“He loves retired life, he likes to chill out and take it easy. We have a big garden and he loves to charge around and then finds a ball and wanders around with it in his mouth, lays down and guards it all day!”
What’s your favourite memory with Jasper since he retired?
“We have a holiday home and he’s been on holiday with us as a family over the years which has been lovely.”
Tell us a funny story about Jasper…
“The old man zoomies are so funny – he spins around four times and then decides he can’t be bothered!”
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HOW WE’VE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG JASPER
RPD Jasper joined Police Service Northern Ireland and served for nine years as a cash, drugs and firearms detection dog.
He retired at the age of nine, in 2023, after developing cataracts in his eyes.
His PSNI handler who worked with him for his whole career adopted him.
He said: “He was phenomenal – he was a joy to work. Placid, responsive, wanted to work. He just wanted to get out there and find it.

“He now loves retirement and is getting a bit old and stiff but still tries to do zoomies in the back yard.
“He’s living his best life.
“He’s friendly, lovely, fun, and everything you’d want in a dog.”
When Jasper got into his food bucket and ate too much, causing bloat, he had to have his stomach pumped by vets. The Foundation contributed towards the bill.

“The Thin Blue Paw is a charity that does absolutely sterling work to help retired police dogs.”
