MORE ABOUT RETIRED PRISON DOG JAX
RPD Jax was just one when he joined the prison service in 2018, and loved his job at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes.
Sadly, he had to retire early just a year into the job when he started limping and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia.
His handler – who said he was ‘good at his job and loved by everyone’ – was heartbroken when he had to rehome him.
Jax went back to his breeder and was soon adopted by Jamie and Hannah, from Berkshire who spotted his rehoming post on Facebook and brought him home in 2020.
They knew his hip dysplasia would need careful management but were prepared to help him and even managed to get him insured – although his hips wouldn’t be covered.

However when, at the beginning of 2021, vets confirmed Jax would need a £7,500 hip replacement, Jamie and Hannah were shocked. They weren’t sure how they’d pay for it and set up a fundraiser but then we stepped in and offered to help.
He recovered well from the surgery and returned to normal life.
Sadly, in November 2024, Jax was diagnosed with sarcoma – a cancer in the soft tissue – that had spread to his lungs and his owners had to say goodbye.
Jamie said: “I wanted to thank everyone at the Thin Blue Paw because you gave us years with him that we potentially wouldn’t have had otherwise. Your kindness gave him a real retirement.”
* We do not generally support retired prison dogs but Jax was a one-off during our founding year.

“I struggle to articulate how much Jax meant to us and how much I miss my shadow, my little adventure buddy. He enriched our lives so much and I will be forever thankful to the Thin Blue Paw for the part you played.” – Jamie
