MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG JJ
RPD JJ joined Kent Police to work as a search and detection dog, and was trained to sniff out cash, drugs and firearms.
He was partnered with dog handler Jenny Preston and retired in 2018 after being diagnosed with a heart murmur – a year before Jenny retired following 30 years of service, along with her other two working dogs, German Shepherd Jabba and Cocker Spaniel Ronnie.
JJ had had a chequered past. At just six-months-old he was taken into a vet to be put to sleep because he’d been so difficult for his owners.
“Thankfully, the vets refused and he was taken to a local kennels before being rehomed to the police,” Jenny said.

She added: “He was a challenge and when I got him I was disappointed; I knew he was going to be a difficult dog to handle.
“He used to run away and wouldn’t let you catch him. I’d tie him to my German shepherd to stop him from disappearing!
“But then, eventually, he settled and we grew closer. He was great at his job and we’d work together at Dover docks or at the Channel Tunnel. He found a lot of money and drugs.”
JJ fell ill with pancreatitis and we covered the £600 bill. He was later found to have a growth putting pressure on his nerves and we helped with his palliative care but he died in September 2024.

“JJ was a special boy who I spent many years with. In the end, he went really quickly and peacefully. I shall really miss the old so-and-so!” – Jenny
