FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG KIRA
RPD Kira worked as a general purpose and firearms support dog with Cleveland Police.
The eight-year-old German Shepherd sadly had to retire after being involved in an accident alongside her handler. She was lucky to escape with just cuts and bruises.
She was a formidable police dog who was incredibly brave in intimidating situations, including during the Hartlepool riots following the widespread unrest over the summer of 2024.
Kira was adopted by Sandra Welford after she contacted the police to say she was interested in giving a retired police dog a new home.
Sandra said: “Kira was very poorly when she was young and hadn’t been expected to live, never mind go on to be a successful police dog.

She was really brave during the riots when things were getting out of control and grabbed a man’s trousers to protect her handler who didn’t have riot gear on.
“She also found and detained a man who’d knocked a lady down, injuring her and taking her bag.”
It’s taken Kira some time to settle into her new home but is now enjoying the quieter pace of life.
She added: “Kira is now getting a taste for treats. At first, she didn’t seem to know what they were. She’s decided they’re nice after all and has started going to the treat cupboard!”

“Kira’s Sergeant recommended the Thin Blue Paw to us. If we never need to ask for help then I’m glad we’ll be helping the ones that do need it. They deserve to be cared for after a hard working life.“
