HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG LIZZY IN RETIREMENT
RPD Lizzy served with the Ministry of Defence Police for six years as a general purpose dog. She was trained for searching and tracking, as well as detaining individuals.
In 2021, Lizzy slipped and fell 30ft down a railway embankment while she was out for a walk. She was lucky to survive but broke her rear leg and snapped a tendon.
After advice from top vets, Lizzy had her leg amputated and that was the end of her career.
Her handler, Kev Basher, decided to leave the service himself shortly after Lizzy’s injury to take care of her.

He said: “I took a massive financial drop when I left so it was with great comfort to be accepted by the Thin Blue Paw.
“We want the best for working dogs and want them to be in as good as health and as pain-free as possible.
“But once retired from the police, although dogs have given their all, they receive no veterinary help at all.”
We now support Lizzy with her monthly injection which helps manage the pain from the arthritis in her remaining rear leg.

“In a perfect world we wouldn’t need charities like the Thin Blue Paw but I’m so grateful it exists as we all want the best for our service animals.”
