MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG LUNA
What are the highlights from Luna’s career?
“Luna was an exceptional police dog due to her natural ability to track and locate people some of whom were in time-critical situations, each one of these jobs were extremely important to us as a team. The highlights of her career were when Luna was recognised by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation in 2022 and received the Lifesaver Award for her work over the years, which was a wonderful way to end her policing career. In 2024, Luna also won Dog of the Year at the People’s Pet Awards.”
What does retirement look like for Luna?
“Luna enjoys being out and about on coastal and woodland walks. She has settled into a more relaxed pace of life and enjoys time amongst my family who adore her. She is very partial to her roast chicken and steak dinners, too!”
What’s your favourite memory with Luna since she retired?
“Luna and I enjoy heading up to the Moray Firth to have some quality time and make memories together. She loves to walk along the beautiful beaches and swim in the sea. We end our days watching the sun go down on the beaches whilst enjoying fish and chips!”
Tell us a funny story about Luna…
“We attended a housebreaking and, as usual, Luna was on the case tracking through rough terrain when we arrived at a broad ditch which Luna jumped across with ease, leaving me holding onto the tracking line. I thought I could glide over it like a gazelle only to find myself waist-deep in the dirtiest, smelliest ditch water. Luna turned round and stood over me tilting her head with that expression that said: ‘Seriously, mum?’”
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG LUNA
RPD Luna was bred in South Wales and moved to Police Scotland in 2012 where she was partnered with PC Linda McBride. The duo licensed together 2014 and hit the ground running.
Linda said: “Over the years Luna gained the respect of other dog handlers, officers whom we served with on the street and our management team.
“Luna’s nose work was exceptional which brought us much operational success, her tenacity was second to none and thus Luna went onto save many lives during her police career.”
Luna and Linda both retired in 2022 after working together for almost eight years across the Stirlingshire area.

Just a few months later, Luna was honoured with the Thin Blue Paw’s Lifesaver Award after saving 38 lives during her phenomenal career.
Linda added: “My heart was bursting with pride at all that she had achieved and I was utterly grateful to the Foundation for recognising Luna’s work over the years.”
Luna now enjoys retired life with Linda and her family, as well as Linda’s other retired police dogs – RPDs Saul and Spud – and her pet, Nala.
Linda added: “Luna was an exceptional police dog and I feel privileged to have had her by my side. We could read one another like a book out on the street and protected one another to no end.”

“Each day we have with Luna we feel truly blessed and I’m grateful to the Thin Blue Paw Foundation for supporting her should she require their assistance.”
