RPD Mina was a general purpose dog with the Ministry of Defence Police and served her whole career at RNAD Coulport Atomics Weapons Establishments site, in Scotland.

She was partnered with her handler, Brian, at just 16-months-old and they worked together for six years until she retired due to a heart murmur.

He said: “She was a lovely dog, she was great at her work. She was good at bite work from the start and responded well to commands. She loved tracking and was like a stream train; she was easy to read when she was on a scent and loved doing it.

“I would take the credit for training her, however I think she was just a natural!”

The 10-year-old retired to live with Brian in 2023 and didn’t always have the best of health.

Brian added: “She had a few close calls, surviving a gastric torsion, eating a towel and her heart murmur. But she settled into retired life really well and it was like she’d always been here.”

Brian is proud to be part of the Foundation family, adding: “It’s such a shame there’s no support for working dogs post-retirement. They give their lives to protecting the public as well as guarding, watching and patrolling.

“The charity has always been there to support these dogs and spread the word about the often overlooked role they play on a day-to-day basis.”

Unfortunately, Mina fell ill in May 2026 and, after vets found she’d gone into heart failure, Brian and his family had to say goodbye.
