MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG SPUD
What are the highlights from Spud’s career?
“We were asked to search a property as part of a major inquiry but Spud only recovered a small amount of drugs. We then continued to search a large wooded area nearby and Spud’s demeanour changed; he indicated at a large log and a holdall was found inside with £20,000 worth of drugs inside! Needless to say, I was a very proud mum.”
What does retirement look like for Spud?
“Spud loves retirement! He loves a cosy bed, good food and plenty walks and a swim in the river. He has been on adventures with us up in the Moray Coast which has stunning beaches.”
What’s your favourite memory with Spud since he retired?
“Watching him running along the beaches and swimming in the sea in the Moray Firth area with RPD Luna and watching them both have the time of their lives. Our police dogs work so hard for us it is just lovely to watch them have that freedom they so deserve in retirement. That area holds many great childhood memories for me, it’s just great returning with my retired police dogs.”
Tell us a funny story about Spud…
“Spud is a very loving wee fella, when family and friends come round to visit there is a pattern of behaviour I can predict. Spud greets them on arrival and whilst I am making a cup of tea Spud quietly gets to work by giving them the puppy dog eyes to gently making his way up onto their knees then before you know it, he’s lying back in their arms snoring his head off! My German shepherds just watch on and roll their eyes!”
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RETIRED POLICE DOG SPUD
RPD Spud was named because he ‘looked like a little baked potato’ due to his coat colour when he was born.
The eight-year-old was trained in Glasgow and then joined PC Linda McBride, licensing in 2018 as a search and detection dog.
Linda said: “Spud was a natural when it came to searching and, if there was something there to be found, he was on it.
“Once he’d done his job and his harness came off, he loved nothing more than being fussed by other officers!
“He was well-known for sporting a little Mohican hairstyle that just added to his wonderful character.”

He featured in the press, assisted Border Force at Edinburgh Airport and worked at Musselburgh Racecourse.
Linda added: “We had so much fun working amongst the public.”
Spud worked alongside Linda’s other retired dogs including general purpose dog Luna, who is now his best friend.
“They loved to run around the fields or swim in the river in between our call-outs,” Linda added.
Linda retired in October 2022 and Spud was retired at the same time to live with her family.

“Spud is a very loving wee fella and I’m glad that, with the help of the Thin Blue Paw, I can give him a wonderful retirement.”
