MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG STARK
What are the highlights from Stark’s career?
“The highlights have been winning West Midlands Police Dog Action of the Year and the Thin Blue Paw’s Bravery Award for an incident when he was confronted and attacked with a machete, striking him numerous times to the head and body. Despite receiving some very nasty injuries whilst being attacked, Stark never gave up, showing extreme determination and bravery.”
What does retirement look like for Stark?
“Retired life is looking pretty good for Stark as my partner and I are both retiring too! That means we will get to spend lots of time with him. If all goes to plan, we will split our time between here and Spain and Stark will get to enjoy six months of the year in a warm, sunny climate with his own swimming pool!”
What’s Stark’s health been like?
Despite being slashed and stabbed during the line of duty, Stark’s health has been good until he suffered an unexpected acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE) or an exploded disc in his spine, for which he is now recovering.
Tell us a funny story about Stark…
“The first would be when we were searching a building for intruders and Stark decided to paint himself white! I heard a loud clatter and he’d knocked over a large tin of pain; he finished doing his job and then appeared covered in gloss! The second would be when he appeared on Steph’s Packed Lunch after winning the Thin Blue Paw Award; first of all he tried to eat one of the microphones and then he decided not to be very polite to Steph McGovern when she went to give him some fuss – the interview was conducted from a distance with the safety of a table between us!”

RPD Stark was bred as part of the West Midlands Police breeding scheme and was paired with veteran police officer Paul Hopley in 2018, as he joined the dog unit.
Just 18 months after licensing, the pair were searching allotments in December 2020 following suspicious activity when Stark chased and detained an offender who started striking and slashing him with a machete.
Paul said: “He hit him well over 20 times, I thought he was going to kill him. But Stark didn’t yelp, leave him or run back to me. He was young and inexperienced but he stayed on task and never backed down. You could never doubt his bravery or courage but his ability as a police dog also continued to improve day by day.”
Stark was rushed to the vets and treated for two deep lacerations to his face and his teenage attacker was convicted in court under Finn’s Law for causing unnecessary suffering to a service animal.
In 2021, Stark was honoured with our Thin Blue Paw Award for Outstanding Bravery.

In January 2025, after six years of service, Stark retired to live with Paul, his family and their other dogs. Paul retired just a few months later and the family plan to split their time between the UK and their holiday home in Spain, where Stark will get to enjoy his very own swimming pool!
Stark retired after damaging a disc in his spine and is still receiving rehabilitative treatment to get him back onto all four paws.
Paul said: “We’re not sure how he injured himself, we went for a normal walk and I noticed his coordination seemed off. The next morning, he was unable to stand and we rushed him to the vets. He was diagnosed with acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE) or an exploded disc in his spine.”
Paul has registered Stark with our Foundation for support now he enters the retired chapter of his life.

“Stark’s rehabilitation could take up to nine months but he is making good progress. Having the support of the Thin Blue Paw makes it all much less stressful.“
Paul, Stark’s former handler and owner
