RPD Toby served as a cash, drugs and firearms search dog with the Norfolk and Suffolk joint dog section for eight years, from 2012 to 2020.
His handler, Jamie Ward, said: “Toby was trained as a passive drugs detection dog and later dual-trained into a proactive cash, drugs and weapons detection dog.
“He had a wonderful career with many successful deployments.”
During one passive drugs training day, Toby indicated on an individual who wasn’t involved in the training and was found to be in possession of controlled substances and arrested for possession with intent to supply.
During one deployment, Toby was sent to try to locate a bag thrown by suspects who ran from a car after being pursued by traffic police. He located a holdall – containing ammunition – within the brambles, and also found a shot gun nearby.
After a long career, Toby retired and was adopted by a new family where he enjoyed the ‘best, fulfilling retirement’.
He remained active and enjoyed swimming and spending time with his family. His new owners registered him with the Foundation and were proud to be part of the organisation.
In July 2026, Toby passed away peacefully at home from natural causes.
