HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG ZUMA IN RETIREMENT

RPD Zuma was imported from the Netherlands at 18-months-old to join Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies’ Joint Dog Section as a cash, drugs and weapons recovery dog.

She was partnered with dog handler, Tony Russell, and during her career recovered thousands of pounds worth of criminal property.

The pair retired together in 2019 and Zuma went to live with Tony in Suffolk as his pet.

When Zuma fell ill in July 2023 – suddenly becoming lethargic, struggling to breathe or walk, and developing a cough – Tony rushed her to the vets and contacted the Foundation for help.

Zuma had tests and was treated for a lung infection with medication but, six weeks later, fell ill again.

Vets operated and discovered an old grass seed that had become embedded internally and was causing her symptoms. Thankfully, they were able to remove it successfully.

Tony said: “I contacted the Thin Blue Paw on a Saturday morning and was emotionally all over the place; within 10 minutes the team called me back to confirm that they would cover the costs of Zuma’s treatment.

“It’s hard to put into words the relief and hope it gave me.”
