CELEBRATING POLICE DOGS
THIN BLUE PAW AWARDS
We are a national charity supporting, rehabilitating, protecting and celebrating serving and retired police dogs from across the United Kingdom. We’re passionate about celebrating the remarkable work of these dogs which is why we launched the Thin Blue Paw Awards.

Celebrating the remarkable work and careers of serving and retired police dogs across the uNITED KINGDOM
We launched the Thin Blue Paw Awards in 2021 as a way to celebrate the remarkable work and careers of our police dogs and their handlers.
Every day we hear inspiring and heartwarming stories of bravery, commitment and skill from colleagues, family and friends of police dogs and their handlers, and we felt there should be an official way to honour their achievements.
Since launching the awards, we’ve issued accolades to dogs who have saved lives, shown outstanding bravery in the line of duty, and made a real difference in their communities, as well as handing awards to officers who have achieved incredible things during their careers.
Every police dog who is a hero for working every day to keep us safe, but these are some of the most inspirational stories.

OUR THIN BLUE PAW AWARD WINNERS

PC DAN CUTHBERTSON AND PD LOUIE
Durham Constabulary – Rising Star Award 2025
Louie was found roaming the streets when he was rescued and went on to become Durham Constabulary’s first digital detection dog.
Partnered with PC Cuthbertson, the pair would soon face their biggest challenge – a heartbreaking investigation with a personal twist.
But PC Cuthbertson knew PD Louie had a job to do; and one he would handle with his usual enthusiasm and focus. And the young rising star didn’t disappoint.
He soon found evidence that would be crucial in the court case against a driver who caused a crash, killing a young woman and an eight-month-old baby.

Staffordshire Police – Police Dog Team of the Year 2025
When a six-strong dog team from Staffordshire Police were called to help other officers outside a hotel on 4th August last year they could not have anticipated the violence that they were met with.
There had been national unrest following the tragic killings of young girls in Southport and riots in Tamworth were intensifying.
PDs Kev, Bones, Vixen, Maddie, Ebony and Delta – and their handlers – would be faced with eight hours of violence including being attacked, kicked and pelted with fireworks.
But they stood strong, working together to keep the crowds at bay and to keep their fellow officers – and members of the public – safe.

PC TOM MARSDEN AND PD YOIKO
Humberside Police – Outstanding Bravery Award 2025
When a wanted man went on a rampage in Humberside, barricading himself in his flat, setting curtains and furniture on fire, and threatening officers with a shovel; PD Yoiko and PC Marsden were on hand to help.
It was smokey and pitch-black in the flat, there was shattered glass all over the floor, but Yoiko was ready to work.
And the duo bravely went into the flat to safely detain the individual before anyone could be seriously injured.
They showed Outstanding Bravery in a hostile situation, and are worthy winners of this award.

PC Josh Lindley and PD Dutch
Cleveland Police – Lifesaver Award 2025
Rookie police dog Dutch and his handler, PC Lindley, were on their first ever shift when they detained two people fleeing an alleged break-in.
They thought their day was over when, just 30 minutes before the end of their shift, an urgent call came through.
A vulnerable man had gone missing and his family were concerned as he’d threatened to harm himself.
It was time for Dutch and PC Lindley to show their real skill, and they set about to save a life…

PC Leandra McCurry and PD Nico
Leicestershire Police – Special Recognition Award 2025
PC McCurry had always dreamed of being a police dog handler, ever since she saw a chase through the playground of her primary school.
She was thrilled when she finally joined the Leicestershire Police dog unit. But the road to her dream wasn’t going to be an easy one.
She was eventually partnered with PD Nico and, with her trusty canine by her side, she would face some of life’s toughest challenges. But nothing could stand in her way…

PC CLAIRE BIRD and RPD FIJI
Surrey Police – Lifetime Achievement Award 2025
Fiji’s life didn’t start out well; rescued as a tiny puppy with her mum and siblings when their owner tragically took their own life, she went on to join Surrey Police.
She had an exceptional career, for six years, with handler PC Bird by her side; saving lives, finding missing people, detaining dangerous criminals, and locating vital evidence.
Retired life hasn’t always been quiet for the veteran, but she’s been lucky to pull through two life-saving surgeries and now enjoys relaxing with her loving family.
After everything she’s been through and everything she’s done, there’s no dog who deserves the Lifetime Achievement award more.

Surrey Police – Crimefighting Duo Award 2025
PD Ella and PC Barwell have shown tireless commitment, fearlessness, and brilliant focus carrying out their role keeping the people of Surrey safe.

RPD Bear
Sussex Police – Lifesaver Award
In December 2024 we named German Shepherd RPD Bear as the third recipient of our Lifesaver Award.
He received the award after saving a man’s life while out on a birthday dog walk with his owners, both retired police dog handlers, in East Sussex, in November 2024.
Bear, who retired from Sussex Police in 2020, was enjoying his first walk out since having major surgery to remove two tumours on his 12th birthday when he led his owners to a vulnerable man.
Police were searching for the man who’d been reported missing on the cold, wet day and, with darkness drawing in, officers feared he wouldn’t survive the night. Bear led the man to safety and reunited him with his family.

PD ZYLA
Leicestershire Police – Outstanding Bravery Award
In August 2024, we issued the Outstanding Bravery Award posthumously to PD Zyla; who died in the line of duty in July 2024.

Her heartbroken handler collected the award on her behalf, describing her as ‘the perfect partner, the perfect family member’.

PC ANDREW KENYON AND PD EDDIE
Greater Manchester Police – Rising Star Award
Three-year-old German Shepherd PD Eddie and his handler, PC Andrew Kenyon, were named as the 2022 Rising Stars after more than 60 arrests in the first 18 months of their careers.
Some of PD Eddie’s highlights include defending PC Kenyon’s colleague who was being attacked with a crowbar by armed robbers and preventing a burglar from turning on his handler with a hammer.
Nominating the pair, Greater Manchester Police said they were ‘flourishing’ and well deserving of the award.

PC LINDA MCBRIDE AND PD LUNA
Police Scotland – Lifesaver Award
A Scottish police dog who saved 38 lives during her incredible eight-year career was named as our Lifesaver Award winner in 2022.

PC Feavyour said: “You can’t train for a real-life situation like that. Since then, I feel safer going out to work; I know that he’ll back me up no matter what.”

PC IAN SWEENEY AND pD LOGAN

PC DARREN SEWELL AND PD JURA
Leicestershire Police – Special Recognition Award

He was diagnosed in 2020 with Stage 4 blood cancer and he embarked on intensive treatment, while still caring for his own police dogs and retired police dogs, and bringing on his new puppy, PD Jura.

PC MEGAN WEST AND PD CALLI
Kent Police – Lifesaver Award

PC paul hopley and pD stark
West Midlands Police – Outstanding Bravery Award
