MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG DALEY
What are some of the highlights of Daley’s career?
“Daley received lots of recognition, locally and nationally, and even got me an interview on the BBC after he won the Star of Suffolk award!”
What does retirement look like for Daley?
“We try to take Daley everywhere we can, we do lots of walks and plenty of visits to the local pub where he loves to watch the food coming out of the kitchen and gets spoiled by all of the staff and customers.”
What’s your favourite memory with Daley since he retired?
“We’ve taken Daley away lots of times on camping and caravan weekends which he loves, also lots of trips to the beach for long walks where he enjoys swimming.”
Tell us a funny story about Daley…
“Daley couldn’t swim when I first got him, but I didn’t realise! I threw a ball in the lake, he chased it and jumped in, but couldn’t swim! I had to jump in a save him. We took him to a yacht yard and taught him to swim using the slip way. Swimming soon became his favourite thing and, wherever we went, he’d try to swim – even if it was just a puddle!”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG DALEY IN RETIREMENT
RPD Daley served Suffolk Police for eight years and won numerous awards during his career. He was PC Chris Squirrell’s first dog as a handler and he kept him on retirement.
Daley, now 12, received two commendations from the Chief Constable; one for bravery after apprehending a man armed with two sledgehammers.
Despite a busy and successful career, he settled into retired life well, even if he sometimes thinks he’s still on duty and jumps into work mode when anyone knocks on the family home’s door!

When Daley started limping and was struggling with a sore paw, in August 2024, Chris took him to the vets who did various tests on a lump on his toe.
Vets were concerned the lump could be cancerous so decided to amputate his toe and we covered the cost of the surgery.
Chris said: “Daley is a really special dog so when he started limping I was really worried.”
Daley’s since recovered well and is now back to his normal life enjoying walks and playtime, even though he’s missing a toe!

“Thankfully, Daley’s made a complete recovery and is unaffected by his missing toe. I’m so grateful that the charity was able to help him continue to enjoy his retirement.”
