MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG TARZAN
What are some of the highlights of Tarzan’s career?
“Tarzan got to travel by helicopter while in the Falklands as well as explore the local landscape and meet different wildlife. The best moment was winning the Technical Evaluation with him in 2020, coming top out of eight teams. He was a testing dog at times but we taught each other so much.”
What does retirement look like for Tarzan?
“Tarzan mostly sleeps; he loves napping on the sofa. I think home comforts are what he likes best. He also has a huge collection of toys and plays with every single one. I’ve tried to downsize but he refuses to let me remove any!”
What’s your favourite memory with Tarzan since he retired?
“I got a free octopus toy and he stole it out of the box and it has become his favourite toy. To this day, he prefers anything octopus-shaped to any other dog toys!”
Tell us a funny story about Tarzan…
“Tarzan loves food – especially bread! When he retired and was waiting to be rehomed he spent a lot of time in our office. He could smell bread in the kitchen so jumped over the baby gate, ran into the kitchen, jumped onto the counter and grabbed the loaf and ran off with it! I have to be careful when I’m eating anything bready; toast, sandwiches or pizza. Tarzan is always there watching and waiting for the crumbs!”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG TARZAN IN RETIREMENT
Eleven-year-old RPD Tarzan worked as an RAF Police patrol dog, deployed in the Falkland Islands, for seven years. He patrolled critical assets at RAF Mount Pleasant.
He also got the opportunity to travel in helicopters to different islands as well as explore the stunning landscapes and see some of the native wildlife.
He spent his whole career working abroad before retiring in July 2021 when he was adopted by one of the dog handlers, Rebecca Hudson, who fell in love with him while she handled him between 2019 and 2020.

Tarzan was enjoying his retirement with Rebecca in Lincolnshire – lounging on the sofa and cuddling his octopus cuddly toy – when he needed a change to his normal arthritis medication.
He was taken off one pain-relief medication by vets when it began affecting his kidney function resulting in him being hospitalised for treatment.
We paid for his monthly medication to help with his pain so he could enjoy retirement to the fullest.
Sadly, in January 2025, Rebecca felt he was struggling with the pain and the sad decision was made to put him to sleep.

IN MEMORY OF
RPD TARZAN 2013-2025
“Tarzan was a characterful dog who made everyday a surprise. It was a pleasure to give him a happy last few years of life. Tarzan was a fighter to the end.” – Rebecca
