MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG BANE
What are the highlights from Bane’s career?
“Bane had a good record for catching everyone he was ever sent to find; he’s so good with his nose that no scent goes undetected and, even in retirement, he’s always finding things on walks!”
What does retirement look like for Bane?
“Retirement is very relaxed for Bane, we take life at his pace to ensure he’s comfortable. He is spoiled with treats and toys and regularly comes on holidays and adventures around the UK. He loves going in the car and a trip to get a coffee before or after a walk!”
What are Bane’s favourite things?
“Bane loves going in the car, a trip to the coffee shop before or after a walk, a yummy ‘Bonio’ treat, and squeezing into your lap even though he’s too big!”
Tell us a funny story about Bane…
“He sneaks into our bed on a Sunday morning and sleeps in until 11am like a teenager even though he usually gets up at 6.30am for his walks!”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG BANE IN RETIREMENT
RPD Bane worked as a general purpose police dog with Hertfordshire Constabulary for five years and spent his final year as a firearms support dog, before retiring in July 2023.
CJay Callaghan worked at the same force and saw Bane advertised on the intranet when his handler couldn’t keep him on his retirement. She adopted him in September 2023.
She said: “Bane is a gentle giant but he forgets how fragile his legs are and how frightening his bark is to people who don’t know him!”

The nine-year-old German Shepherd cross Dutch Herder was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and arthritis which needed careful management.
CJay added: “Bane still thinks he’s a puppy at heart; he throws himself around and plays enthusiastically with every new toy, despite his health conditions.”
We help pay monthly for his daily medication and pain relief to manage the conditions, and he also needs hydrotherapy to help treat his hip dysplasia.

“The Foundation helps support us with his monthly medication costs which means we can afford to top him up with additional supplements and pay for monthly vet visits to monitor his condition.“
CJay, Bane’s owner
